Not a good way to start the day
Edit: I had just bought new tires at Costco two weeks ago.
My guess is that thieves scoped out a bunch of parking lots and saw new tires in the size they needed, so they took the wheels. Guys at work say that pros can do the whole job in 5 minutes with the use of pneumatic power wrenches.
Update: This morning I called the police and got a report number. I then called my auto insurance company, and gave them the police report number. They said it was covered under my comprehensive, minus my $300 deductible. I called my mechanic (Murph @ Honda Zone), and he recommended *not* getting it towed, since it might damage the car further. He said I should call a junkyard and get old cheap wheels to put on until I could drive it down to the shop to get real replacements. The junkyard said the wheels would be $125 each, and tires $40 each. Murph said that was way too much, and it would be better for him to just order new wheels and tires, and come over to my lot to install it himself. If I got insurance approval, that is.
So I called my insurance company (Commerce via AAA) and explained the situation. They wanted a written estimate Faxed from Honda Zone, as well as my Costco receipt showing my recent new tire purchase. I got them the Faxes, but the second clerk just said I needed to submit a receipt, and they would work out a reimbursement.
“It’s a go,” I told Murph. He called the local Honda dealer to get new wheels, only to learn that this month there have been five local thefts like this (all four wheels, size P205/55R16)! Murph recommended locking lug nuts which require a special key to turn — that would deter future thefts. It wouldn’t be covered by insurance, but I sprung for the option anyway. Because what would suck worse than having my new tires stolen again?
If I were you, and I lived in the Cambridge/Somerville area, and I had a car with wheels of that size with new tires, and I parked outside, I’d head over to the local auto store or dealer right now and pick me up a set of those nuts. Locking nuts to deter thieving nuts — what could make more sense than that?
Update2: 29 hours later, the car is all fixed! Murph brought over the new wheels and installed them on-the-spot. Then I drove over to the shop, where he put the car on a lift, checked it out, and declared no other damage. I paid $1680 for the whole thing; we’ll see how much Commerce insurance will reimburse me. Murph also installed Acura-brand locking lug nuts ($80 for a set of 4, a lot pricier than the non-dealer brands). The locking lug nuts are round on the outside, and custom-cut grooved on the inside, so they require a special key to use. My only concern is that with the wheel covers installed, you can’t even see the locking lug nuts. So any potential thieves will still get to the point of taking off the wheel covers, and then… Psych! I wonder if they’d be mad enough to vandalize the car at that point. Oh well.

oh man, that really sucks!
Is this for real??? I can’t believe it!! Sorry bud!
That stinks.
What the heck? They went to that much effort?
I’m sorry Ed.
why didn’t they just take the whole car? seems like a lot of effort to just get tires.
oh no!
that’s a bummer!!
Sad… But now you can get Costco tires!
OH NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! stinks!!!
gasp! gosh! That’s like the second time around that area! So sorry!
oh my goodness. that’s your car!?!? i’m so sorry. yikes.
sorry, man. were they old tires, at least?
time to get some spinner rims, but with the wheel locks this time
Dude, I’m sorry that happened to you. At least there’s Costco to go to for the tires.
at least you had the presence of mind to take a good photo
If you need to make a Costco run or need a ride, let me know! That totally sucks. I don’t know if it’ll be considered insurance fraud, but I want to leave a message to any would-be thief/thieves to my car to just completely total it. It’s just too much of a hassle and the car won’t drive the same as it used to….
aurgh, feel for you!
oh man…
wow. uh, at least it’s friday? that does suck!
that’s awful. will your insurance cover the theft of the wheels/tires?
OMG, that is jacked! Let us know what happens with the insurance company!
omg that sucks!!!!!
I would file an insurance claim. I had the same thing happen to my car a few years back. They dented a part of the car getting the wheels off (which insurance covered). It also looks like they dropped your car on the front brake rotors so I’ll bet that those are warped. You’ll need to either get new rotors and pads or at least get the current ones resurfaced. Again, it will be covered by insurance. You’d be surprised at how much factory replacement Acura rims and OEM tires cost. Insurance will give you a prorated amount of that price which can buy some decent rims and tires from http://www.tirerack.com or http://www.tires.com or any other online wheel store.
For locking lugnuts, there are 2 main brands. Having owned both (McGard and Gorilla), I would recommend Gorilla because the key is stronger. I’ve had the McGard key strip and I had to drive my car to a shop to get the lock cut off….not fun. Look on Ebay or various Honda forums to get a good set of used OEM rims (if that’s what you want)….don’t buy “OEM replicas” as their quality control is not as good as name brand rims.
Hey Mon, I wish I could be picky about the brand of rims, tires, and locking lugnuts. But Murph is going to order from the dealer to get the parts ASAP. I guess if I didn’t mind doing the research and waiting for mail-order parts to arrive, I could save a few hundred $. But then I’d have to rent a car in the meantime, plus coordinate the ordering and delivery of parts… I think it’s a wash in the end. Thanks for the comments, though!
Murph ROCKS.
Sniff sniff
So you are going to spend 4x $125 and 4 x $40 for rims&tires. That comes out to $760. You have to pay the ins. deductible of $300 so they will reimburse you $460. Now how much are your premiums going to go up? Yes, that bites anyway you look at it. I think I have the same tires as you on my Mazda 3.
oh my!! Sorry to hear about the tires. That’s a terrible way to start the morning.
Lock nuts would be a good purchase. They aren’t going to stop a determined thief, but if it makes them move on to the next car, then they’ve done their job. That’s a creative use of a milk crate btw. It saves them from having to do an additional jack-up for the rear wheels once they get the fronts off.

Sorry to read about this
. Try playing some violent videogames for therapy. Grand Theft Auto usually does it for me when something bad happens, but even Lego Star Wars will do.
oh no!!! =( That’s terrible!!! And they were such nice new tires too…
I’m sorry your day had to start off like that.
unbelievable. the jerks. and overlooking the whole stealing issue, why would they need so many of the same kind of tire?
Big bummer
sorry ed. the same exact thing happened to another highrocker a few weeks ago. i can tell they were the same guys because of their plastic milk crate MO. yeah, definitely get those locking nuts. i would also take it in to the garage to make sure anything under your car isn’t messed up. my tires are relatively old, but now i’m considering getting those locking nuts myself!
That really sucks. Random props by the way. Keep going with the interesting posts.
Good thing you had insurance. You know what would be funny? If you set something up so that before they knew there were locking nuts on there and they were tryng to take off the wheels, it’d spray something on their face. Like acid.
nice mechanic!
=(
Sorry to hear all the trouble you went through!
i love murph. we’ve been using him for years. for those that might want to use him, it’s Hondaz Zone.
HAHA! Oh you know I was waiting for that comment!!! >;^)
sorry to hear that. at least they could have propped up the car on bricks or something more stable. my folks (the south africans) have a better way of preventing what happened to you:

Hi. Nice xanga… epropz. This car thingy reminds me of my hubby’s car parked overnight in Brooklyn, NYC a few yrs ago. It was a Honda Accord V6… all the tires n rims were gone in the morning. Dont u just hate that?!
