It’s Just Money
For the next two Saturdays, I’m helping Pastor Gary teach a CCFC seminar about the Christian perspective and use of money. (Same seminar both days, just to give people a choice of which date is more convenient.) He and I have developed a lot of the material from the Economic Discipleship smallgroup that he and Mako started about a year ago. Back in November I thought about developing some related material into a 4-part class on money, but I never found the activation energy. Fortunately, Gary put together the outline and most of the content, so I was able to simply comment and interject.
The class will present a balanced Biblical perspective on money, working to reconcile the opposing viewpoints of “Money is a Blessing” and “Money is a Curse.” Then we will cover the economic state of the world, our role as Christians, and current major efforts in the area. I will talk about budgeting and tracking finances, using the Excel spreadsheet that June and I developed last year. And finally we’ll brainstorm ideas on how to save and give effectively, and talk about the importance of community in this effort.
Gary’s official email announcement to CCFC is in the first comment. Please let me know if you’re interested or planning on coming.

It’s Just Money
How to invest your financial resources
in God’s compassion and justice
Here’s why you should consider attending:
* We spend MOST of our time either making money or spending money.
* Jesus had more to say about money than almost anything else. He considered it essential to discipleship.
* Everybody’s talking about “the poor” these days–even American Idol! Christians should be leaders in this area, not followers.
* It’s an extremely important aspect of church’s value for social justice.
We will deal especially with the following questions:
* What does the Bible really teach about money?
* Does God want me to be wealthy?
* How much does God want me to give to others and to whom?
* How can I make sure the money I give is being used effectively?
* How does `economic discipleship’ relate to the rest of my spiritual life?
I’m definitely offering the seminar Saturday, May 12 AND May 19 @ 10:30-3:30 PM w/ light lunch both days.
Please email me at gary@ccfconline.org if you’re interested or have any questions. Also, I’d be open to adding a 3-week Sunday School class before church if that would work for some.
Hi Ed, I may be able to come on May 19th. Will the same thing be covered both days or is it a two-parter?
nice! i didn’t know other people would be helping with it… i’ll drag joy to the one on the 19th.
Awesome – hope it goes well!
same question as joyosity — is it the same thing both days, or is it 2 parts?
not sure if i can squeeze it in tomorrow, but maybe May 19….
sounds interesting, but I don’t think I can make it.
Same seminar both days. I’ll edit the post to make that clear. CL, I’ll email you the ppt if you want.

this is so so great. could we have a ppt file too, please? muchas gracias.
sounds nice. glad you guys are doing this.
ppt for me too please! = )
Hey Ed, your seminar sounds really interesting. I can’t make it next Saturday because parents will be in town, but I would love a ppt as well!
i think that…
if you have money or if you don’t have money, the difficult things are (1) to not love money and, then, (2) to actually see the money as the Lord’s and yourself as only a steward.
for a long time, i did not understand the parable of the wicked servant… but i love that parable now. …the wicked servant had no love for his master’s money; therefore, he had no problem giving it away. it is, perhaps, the only example in the Bible where i would like to imitate
Ed, I’m interested in attending on the 19th. Sign me up, please! Thanks!
Update: the first class went well, but we’re refining and updating the Powerpoint now. So I’ll mail it to folks after next Saturday’s class.
Sounds awesome! Haha, any chance next time you and June come out to do one at our church? No pressure…
