  • Inspired Sandwich

I’m going to do it.  This Sunday, I’m going to try to make the sandwich I had at Darwin’s last week.  Except we’re making 240 of them for Soul Food.  I’m hoping that for many people, this will be the best meal they’ve had all week, and hopefully one of the best sandwiches they’ve ever had.

In my trial runs, I learned a few things:

    • In a sandwich, the differences between brands of Brie are indistinguishable.  Any double-creme brand (60% butterfat excluding water weight) is fine.  I’m not a fan of the triple-cremes for most cooking purposes — too buttery.
    • When you buy a few lettuce leaves (mesculin salad mix) at Shaw’s, the weight might register as zero, and the cashier might not charge you for it at all.
    • A while back, I wrote that using the right amount of salt is one of the top-3 important rules to cook well.  For sandwiches, that rule applies to condiments — especially Dijon mustard.  Too little, and you can’t taste it.  Too much, and it’s like sucking straight from the bottle.

I was also thinking it would be cool to dress up as the Lord of the Rings characters, but it’s not going to happen.  Takes too much time, and even the real costumes don’t look very impressive in real life (I saw them at the Museum of Science).  That’s the subject for another post…  Also, I was having nightmares of kids running around and tripping on my sword.  Yikes!

  • save one for me… =(

    We won’t be there.

  • woo hoo for soul food core! =)

  • some of the costumes were really cool though..especially the orks’. i liked strider’s outfit too. he’s the man.

i forgot, were you an elf or an ork? (i think you shoulda been a wizard). i’m so happy they told me i was an elf..even though i’m a ‘little’ elf.

  • Wait, you thought it would be fun to randomly dress up as a LOTR character?  Or for Halloween?

Speaking of not getting charged for by weight produce, once at the Wegman’s in Ithaca, they were carrying black truffles.  I think it was like >$80/lb., and I so wanted to see what they tasted like, I considered breaking off an unweighable piece and just putting it in my pocket.  But I didn’t.

  • i request seeing you dressed up as sauron. you would look good with a long pointy beard and an evil smile. :)

  • wow.  but what if people are lactose or don’t like cheese?

  • Rich: sorry, the sandwiches won’t keep once you spread the mayo and Dijon…  :(

JC: hope to see you there and have your help!

NR: I don’t remember who I “was” (as told by the height detector).  I agree that Strider’s THE MAN.

Joy: That should have been a comment in my shoplifting post!  =)  By the way, truffles do NOT taste good by themselves; they’re used to flavor sauces.  Also, the costume was for Halloween.

AR: Do you mean Saruman the White?  The Dark Lord Sauron has the one unblinking eye, just like your pumpkin.

  • SL: We’ll have some cheese-free and some meat-free sandwiches.

  • I admire you quest for food excellence

  • what– you don’t think you dress up as one big unblinking eye?!

  • oops–big mistake. yes, i meant saruman. and yes, sauron may be a distant cousin to my pumpkin. :)
