  • Today I am trying to transfer data from my old Win98 desktop to my new WinXP box.
This is about as arduous as moving in real life.  Even though I am no
computer networking neophyte, I tremble at the Herculean task before
me.  I am googling web pages for help and advice, and one of them is
titled: THE MOTHER OF ALL BATTLES.

[Update: 3 hours later, I am able to transfer files over the network.  Whew!]

So I actually didn’t buy a new PC; I bought braymp’s old research
machine.  It had the video card I needed and a whopping 4GB of RAM, so
it plays WoW with no problem.  Once I finish transferring data, I will
be looking to sell my old machine.  Does anyone (or maybe anyone’s mom)
need a basic computer for email, web surfing, DVD watching, and CD
burning?  This is the computer I used for 5 years and would still be
using but for World of Warcraft.  I’m thinking the price will be in the
mid-to-high two figures, haha.  I will even leave my 80′s MP3
collection on it, which would be worth the price for the humor value
    alone.

Speaking of humor value, I haven’t written about dating in a while.  So
here’s an embarrassing dating story.  One day I went over to June’s
place, having called her just a few minutes before to let her know I
was coming.  I rang the doorbell and no one answered.  I rang again,
and one of her housemates opened the door.  I told her I was here to
see June and went upstairs.  Now June shares an attic bedroom and a
second-floor living room with a roommate, but the roommate has since
left, leaving her with the two rooms to herself.  So I went up to the
living room and saw June on the phone sitting on a futon with her back
turned to me.  I figured, “Aha, she was on the phone so she didn’t hear
me ring.”  So I crept up slowly and put my arm around her.  Only to
find out it wasn’t her.  o_O

But this stranger was on the phone, so I couldn’t talk and explain
myself.  She didn’t jump from surprise but just looked at me
    quizzically
and kept on talking.  I continued upstairs to the attic calling,
“June? June?” to no avail.  Where was I — parallel universe or
Punk’d?  Finally I saw her sitting on the balcony outside her
    attic
window, reading.  I explained what happened and asked, “Who is
    that
random girl in your room?”  She said she’d totally forgotten, but
    one
of her housemates had a 10-day guest and asked if she could stay in the
living room for the duration.  Mystery solved, dignity still
    recovering.
