Do Korean women have the best sense of smell?
Once ykyea told me that she had a super sense of smell. Then another Korean woman told me that they all do. So I googled it and found this:
From http://www.somethingyoushouldknow.net/transcript09_14_04.htm
Korean Americans have a better ability to smell than White who are better than Black who are better than Japanese. As you get older your sense of smell drops down about half of those over the age of sixty-five and three quarters of those over the age of eighty have a reduced ability to smell. Women have a better ability to smell than men. And when you are hungry your sense of smell is better than when you are full. And the first thing in the morning your sense of smell is best.
So I wonder how can they go to the Super88 market in Allston. It reeks! It knocks my nose for a loop and makes me not want to cook. If I had a super sense of smell like a Korean woman’s, I could never go there. My friend David says it’s a matter of value judgment. Just because they can detect the smell better doesn’t mean they object to it more. Thoughts?

i’ve never heard of that one. you’d think that sniffing kimchee all of our lives would deaden our olfactory senses…
i’ve also heard that korean women have a good sense of smell…especially korean mothers! the article says that most people’s sense of smell declines as they get older, but i think it heightens for korean women.
changed! I just wrote about this on my xanga a little bit ago! ha ha that’s funny.
If that’s true then a pregnant, hungry, young Korean woman who just woke up in the morning should have super smelling powers.
I can’t believe you googled “Korean women’s sense of smell” I gotta find you more stuff to do.
ps. Why does the quote say “Korean Americans?” Don’t they come from the same genetic pool as Koreans?
I wish they had a Super88 where I live. The smell is not so bad when it reminds you of home cooked meals, etc. Your friend is basically right, it is all a matter of taste… or in this case smell
Might it be because their taste buds get such a workout? I don’t know what typical black person meal taste like, but from my experience, Korean food is ridiculuously strong. Korean food >>> white food > Japanese food.
“Just because they can detect the smell better doesn’t mean they object to it more.”
This is so true. This has to be true. On of the foundations of Korean food is daehn-jang and daehn-jang smells like a sack full of anuses (ani?). While this sounds gross, it is delicious.
As some stores have started to use frequencies and other smelling items, it has become a part of the marketing science.
i get a heightened sense of smell when i’m sick but not congested in my sinuses…. it’s the worst “ability” i have.
gosh, I should count my lucky stars that women don’t object to smells more often.
note to self: buy deodorant. my arm-pits smell.
yummmmmmy korean food!!!!
